Working out to raise money has been the theme of this new year and it has been rewarding and inspiring to be a part of it! I've received various stories and words of guidance from those diagnosed or their family and friends, and one common denominator is "your body is your temple". With soccer and the guidance of my parents, I've always been in tune with trying to eat healthy and exercise but now more than ever I appreciate that this could save my life.
It made it that much more empowering to be able to participate in the "Karen" Against Cancer workout at my crossfit gym, CrossFit Construct. The proceeds from the event went to both my foundation and that of Mikee Gomez, a friend of Mayra's fighting his own, grueling battle with stomach cancer. In total, we raised $891 for my foundation!
Thank you to Coach Mayra for organizing, Elisabeth Akinwale and everyone who donated items for the raffle, Coach Derek for hosting us at the gym, and a BIG thank you to everyone who participated and donated! You have all been like family to me, always checking in to see how I am doing and cheering me on along the way.
Attached is a video of the final moments of the workout...150 wall balls for time! Since day one, wall balls have been one of the hardest exercises for me. It is a leg burn like no other! But the atmosphere at the gym was incredible, with everyone cheering each other on to the very end.
Coach Mayra chose this workout because it requires grit, will, and fighting it out with every bit of strength you have left. I haven't had the chance to meet Mikee, but this workout embodies the will we both have to win in our own battles.
